Chivaree Circus were asked to present a new show at the 2016 Postcards festival at Jackson’s Lane theatre. The festival is a celebration of circus and cabaret, at a venue that champions this kind of performance, and has a reputation as one of the best places to see new work and exciting companies.

While we have created a huge range of different shows across Europe, The Middle East and North Africa for events and festivals – this would be our first hour long show where we would have complete creative control. We brought in 6 fantastic circus performers from our core team, 2 wonderful musicians to create an original soundtrack and a technical director to help bring it together.

In the run-up to the show we had a weeks rehearsal for creation, and had a new set of costumes designed and made in our studio. The premise was a retelling of the myth of Persephone that explores the seasons and ideas about love, life and death. We mixed fire, aerial, acrobatics, mime and dance to tell this story alongside live music. The show sold out in 10 days and we performed to a full house.

After receiving fantastic feedback, we are now looking for opportunities to take the show forward. On 25th January 2017 it will be presented for a week as part of the Vault’s Festival in Waterloo in a new promenade style – and we hope to be able to take it outside of London to more festivals in the future.
